In celebration of Art Toth’s long life, we invite you on a journey of his legacy that he left us.
Art, or “Arturo” was born to Hungarian parents in New Castle, Pennsylvania on February 22, 1916 (George Washington’s birthday). He was always fond of saying he was an honest man. He served in the navy in World War II and then went to college after the war to get his Bachelor of Arts degree in Recreation from San Diego State University.
At the same time, he became pen pals with Josefina from Puerto Rico, whom he later married in 1954. They then came to Long Beach, California where he went to work for the Recreation Department of the City of Long Beach. He worked for the city for 25 years and was one of the first Park Rangers at the El Dorado Nature Center. During this time, he had two daughters; Josie and Lisa whom he loved so much.
Art loved nature, life and children, and was able to combine all three in his career and when he retired. He was also known as “Grandpa” to thousands of Burbank School students and alumni. His daughters went to Burbank School in Long Beach and later became teachers there.
His trademarks were his whistle, ball cap, Hawaiian shirt and big smile. He loved the Burbank Bailadores Dance Group and he was always there for anyone who needed help. Art loved to travel, especially by train. Every year the whole family traveled to different places with the favorite places being the family farm in Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico and dear friends in Colorado.
Wherever he went he always found someone to talk to. Be it in Canada, Hawaii, across the United States or Puerto Rico, Art always made many friends. He instilled in us the importance of being bilingual and to always try our best.
He loved Mariachi music, learning about different cultures and taking care of the environment. Even though he is gone, Art’s spirit will never be forgotten. His legacy will live on through his loving wife, daughters, family and friends throughout the world.
So, the next time you hear a bird sing or see a rainbow, know that Art, or “Grandpa” is right there with you.
In lieu of flowers, we are planning to start a “Grandpa’s” garden at Burbank School where he spent so much time volunteering and inspiring the next generation.
